MARS RANGER CORPS — OFFICIAL MEMORIAL PREAMBLE
Saturn Early Warning Station was not a military installation in the conventional sense. It was a community — a working habitat of five hundred and ten men and women whose roles spanned command and operations, engineering and environmental systems, sensors and signals intelligence, security, medicine, logistics, and the seventy-two Rangers assigned to defend them all. They had built lives there, in the ring shadow of Saturn, at the edge of human reach. They had colleagues, routines, four years of shared history and institutional memory accumulated at the outermost posting in the solar system.
When the Siege came, they held their watches. Engineers and sensor technicians stayed at their consoles. Medical staff treated the wounded until there were no more wounded to treat. The Rangers held every corridor they could hold for as long as corridors could be held. They did not break. The station did.
This record exists to carry the names of those who were lost — not Rangers alone, but all of them. The five hundred who did not come home from the post they had been assigned and had never been adequately defended.
We carry them.
Command staff did not stand regular watches. They were present at their posts when the station fell.

The record above carries five hundred names. It is correct that five hundred names are recorded. What it does not carry — what it was designed not to carry — is the number from which five hundred was derived.
The actual casualty count from the Saturn Siege, as recorded in the original field triage logs, evacuation manifests, and MRC mortuary affairs documentation, was five hundred and seven.
The decision to round down was made not in the field and not by the Rangers who fought there, but in a committee room aboard the EW Congress orbital platform, by personnel who had not been to Saturn and would not go. The argument, recorded in committee transcript and preserved in the Shadow Canon, was that five hundred was a cleaner number — that it carried more weight in official publications, that it would read better in the memorial language, that the difference was administratively negligible.
Seven people were deemed administratively negligible. Their names are not on this record. They are recorded here instead.

His body was not recovered. His fate was not confirmed. The record marks him KIA because the record does not have a category for what actually happened to him. The Shadow Canon does. That account is preserved separately.
The committee transcript in which the rounding decision was made is available in the Shadow Canon field record for the Saturn Siege. The language used is bureaucratic and calm. There is no evidence that anyone in that room paused.
