Ashes and Sparks

Marcus Keen grew up inside the abandoned industrial bones of Detroit, where warmth came from whatever could still be made to burn.

The factories no longer produced anything useful, but their shells remained—vast structures of rusting metal, broken glass, and stripped machinery occupied by families with nowhere else to go.

Winter entered through walls, windows, and ventilation shafts.

At night, the residents burned whatever they could find:

Oil. Plastic. Scavenged wiring. Broken furniture. Insulation. Packaging. Anything capable of producing heat.

Fire was not spectacle.

Fire was safety.

Fire was family.

Fire meant Marcus and his younger sister survived another night.

02

The Boy Who Kept the Light

Marcus’s father died during a fuel-for-bread exchange on a frozen bridge.

His mother survived the event physically.

Grief took the rest of her by degrees.

She spoke less. Ate less. Stopped responding when Marcus entered the room. The household contracted until only two children were still actively trying to survive inside it.

Marcus and his sister.

He found food.

He found fuel.

He learned which stairwells were controlled by gangs, which market levels still traded honestly, and which abandoned industrial rooms retained enough insulation to hold heat.

When the dark pressed close, Marcus talked.

He told stories. Made jokes. Described buildings as though they were beautiful. Invented futures in which they would leave Detroit and never be cold again.

He made promises he had no authority to make.

His sister listened.

That was enough.

People later claimed combat made Marcus loud.

They were wrong.

Marcus became loud in Detroit.

Combat simply gave the noise somewhere to go.

03

The Loudmouth Recruit

At seventeen, Marcus forged an identification record and entered the earliest Mars Ranger Special Forces intake under an underage waiver that officially did not exist.

His body suggested he was old enough.

His eyes suggested he had not been a child for years.

He trained with cracked armor, improvised tools, and equipment assembled from discarded parts.

Instructors described him as reckless.

They were correct, but incomplete.

Marcus understood danger.

He simply believed standing still was worse.

He attacked every exercise as though it were the one opportunity he had to rewrite his life.

Instructors nearly removed him from the program twice.

They could not ignore one fact:

Marcus Keen survived everything.
04

Becoming Torch

His callsign arrived during a field exercise.

Marcus siphoned fuel from a training lander, assembled an improvised flamethrower, and deployed it in a designated no-fire zone.

The exercise area became an inferno.

Recruits scattered. Instructors shouted. Suppression systems activated too late.

One recruit watched Marcus moving through the smoke and said:

“Kid’s a torch waiting to happen.” Ranger Training Record // Informal Transcript

The name stayed.

So did the fire.

05

Block 17

Torch entered his first major combat deployment during the Block 17 Collapse of 2205.

Ration convoys had stopped. Power failed across the lower stacks. Armed factions controlled transit levels. Industrial chemical fires spread through ventilation systems and structural cavities.

Torch entered the smoke beside Darius Venn.

Grim took elevation.

Torch advanced.

During the final clearance of Tower Sector 12, command issued an emergency order for controlled burns to stop the chemical fire from crossing into inhabited levels.

The charges were already placed.

Lighting them would destroy part of the structure.

Refusing would allow the fire to spread.

No one moved.

Torch did.

He triggered the ignition sequence.

Fire moved upward through thirty levels.

Screams and soot entered the same updraft.

Seven civilians reached safety who would otherwise have died.

The authorization record remained incomplete.

Torch never asked it to become complete.

Block 17 did not give him his name.

It confirmed it.

06

Noise Against Silence

After Block 17, Torch talked louder.

He joked during equipment checks. Narrated breaches. Commented on architecture while under fire. Insulted enemies who could not hear him and machines that could not answer.

Rangers interpreted the behavior as bravado.

Grim understood it differently.

Silence had always meant someone was gone.

A room became silent after Marcus’s father died.

His mother stopped speaking before she stopped breathing.

Detroit towers fell quiet when the fires went out and no fuel remained.

Silence meant nobody was left to answer.

So Torch kept talking.

In combat, the voice became equipment.

It called distances. Warned of movement. Kept civilians focused during extraction. Told the Rangers beside him that he was still alive.

Their answers told him they were too.

07

Red Dunes

During the Red Dunes conflict of 2208, Torch advanced through the streets while Grim controlled the high ground and Elias Ward held the defensive line.

It was the first time the three Rangers fought together in the formation that would become Check Fire.

Mid-engagement, Torch began describing the way Martian dust moved through the street and the way sunlight caught the fracture lines in damaged biodomes.

Grim incorporated the observation into his targeting.

Stone ignored him.

Torch concluded that neither man possessed an adequate appreciation for aesthetics.

He never revised the judgment.

The habit was not distraction.

His sister had taught him to look at broken things until they stopped being ugly.

It was how two children survived Detroit without allowing Detroit to decide what the world meant.

Torch carried the practice into war.

Broken structures were still worth seeing.

Broken people were still worth saving.

08

Ganymede

Six weeks before the Saturn assignment, Torch led a civilian evacuation on Ganymede.

The operation ended with a disciplinary review.

The surviving public record preserves only the board’s conclusion:

“Tactically unorthodox but operationally effective.” Mars Ranger Corps Disciplinary Review Board // 2210

The phrase followed him into subsequent assignments.

It was intended as criticism.

Among Rangers, it became the shortest accurate summary of Marcus Keen’s career.

09

Operational Assessment

Torch is a breacher.

Breachers move first.

They stand closest to the charge, enter before the room is known, and create a path through structures designed to remain closed.

The role fits him because Marcus Keen has spent his entire life refusing to accept that a barrier is final.

Primary Trait
Forward motion under pressure
Combat Function
Breach creation, incendiary denial, and assault entry
Protective Function
Creates evacuation paths and draws threats away from civilians
Psychological Anchor
Noise against silence
Field Strength
Rapid environmental processing disguised as casual commentary
Ranger Ethos
No sealed door means the people behind it are lost

Torch’s apparent impulsiveness conceals unusually fast battlefield processing.

He notices structural weaknesses, air movement, combustible materials, civilian behavior, and enemy hesitation while appearing to talk about something unrelated.

His mind moves quickly enough that formal explanation often arrives after action.

This creates disciplinary problems.

It also saves lives.

10

What He Protects

Torch is remembered for explosions.

The reputation is understandable.

He tends to arrive with them.

But fire is not the center of Marcus Keen.

Protection is.

Every breach creates a path.

Every charge removes an obstacle.

Every shouted joke keeps someone breathing through another few seconds of fear.

Every reckless advance is directed toward someone who cannot get out alone.

Torch is not the man who burns everything.

He is the man who knows exactly what must not be allowed to burn.

Protected Operational Record

Torch’s service record following the formation of Check Fire contains extensive classified material.

Public records establish only that he was assigned to Saturn Early Warning Station alongside Grim and Stone at the commencement of the Saturn deployment.

Record sealed under MRC Continuity Protection Protocol. Disclosure would compromise narrative chronology beginning with Saturn Early Warning Station and continuing through restricted Cold Fire operations.
